Ybor City

Ybor City - Several shots of the Ybor City section of Tampa, Florida. Ybor has seen many changes over the years. While I don't usually promote Wikipedia, you can get a decent (though brief) idea of the changes and general feel of the place by clicking here.

Note: For a decent history of Ybor City, I recommend Gary Mormino's book The Immigrant Word of Ybor City: Italians and Their Latin Neighbors in Tampa, 1885-1985.

Finally Tampa Bay Times writer Jeff Klinkenberg's article about Gary Mormino's retirement is a must read.

Two more photos from Ybor City were posted on February 12.

Boyd Hill Nature Park and Salt Creek Trip

Dr. Thomas Hallock, an associate professor at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, will be speaking this evening at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve on "How Do We Find Nature in the City?" He will be joining (joined by?) Tampa Bay Times writer Jeff Klinkenberg, journalist Cathy Salustri, a graduate of USFSP's Florida Studies, and Wendy Joan Biddlecome of Hernando Today/Tampa Tribune. In honor of this evening's talk, I'm posting the following two photos.

The first one is of Tom Hallock on one of the Salt Creek field trips (creek trips?) with his Nature Writing class; the second and third, taken in 2011, were taken at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve. (Sorry, Jeff, Cathy and Wendy. I'm not trying to ignore you guys here; I just don't happen to have photos of you three.)

Tom Hallock (in white cap), on the way back to USFSP, on Salt Creek, in 2012. Photo taken from St. Petersburg's Thrill Hill (aka the Third Street South bridge). Nothing like playing "dueling cameras!"

These two were taken at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve during the spring of 2011.

The color version of Tuesday's photo.
